Gloves / Bar mitts?
Posted by Jim Hamm on November 10, 2023 at 7:29 pmI’m a new trike pilot flying a Rev X. I want to fly through the TN winter. I’ve got a snowmobile suit, but I’m looking for some recommendations on gloves and / or bar mitts to keep my hands warm this winter. Any suggestions? What has worked well for you guys who are flying in the cold?

After decades of flying in the winter/cold the best solution is heated gear starting with gloves. Typically your trike will have a 12 volt source. Below you will see some discussion on this.

Thanks Paul,
I used electric gloves when I was flying PPG in CO, but it was a lot colder there. TN winters are not that cold, and I’m just looking for a good pair of bar mitts for a trike. Seems like nobody makes them any more, at least not in the US.

Who knows where to get bar mitts that leave the control bar exposed inside the mitt? That is my recommendation. And I urge people not to use bar mitts that have material around the bar because you have to death grip the controls to hang on. I like to use a rubber coated “box handler” glove inside the bar mitt which is as “sticky” as my bare hands on the bar grips so its just like flying in the summer.

I ordered some “Pogies” from Amazon. They are neopreme and also called paddle mitts. Kayakers use them in cold weather / water. They attach to themselves over the bar. They have not arrived yet, but I will update when I have had a chance to use them.

Got mine from NorthWing, they leave the bar exposed to your hands inside the mits.

I saw the ones from North Wing in an 11 year old video, but I’m not sure if they still sell them, and they are closed this month so I haven’t been able to contact them and see. They look like they would be good ones, and they even have battery heat.
How long ago did you get yours?

Pogies / bar mitts came in yesterday. 4mm neoprene with soft lining. Easy install with velcro. Easy to get hands in and out and have direct contact with the bar. I was even able to put my PTT inside.

Can’t seem to post the link, but type in HEYTUR Pogies and pops right up. $19.99.
