Good luck with the training! I’ll offer my tuppence worth – stay humble, be patient. Learning to fly can be frustrating, you’ll make mistakes, but with time and patience you will get there. And when you do get there, stay humble – you’ll still have SO much to learn!!

Yep here’s your certificate now go and learn how to fly.Same as a car.

New to the site also a tip for landing, keep your speed pull that bar back fly it to the ground.

Hi Ron, I suspect this will be an amazing thread with valuable information as already stated above. First thing to remember is landing a trike, even though some will say otherwise, is NOT easy to learn. It’s a bit difficult right up until it becomes effortless. In the mean while I have had to put my therapist hat on and calm down my distraught students that are ready to throw in the towel many many times. Above all there are a few things that can make landing with whatever technique you are using much more difficult or impossible.
First is where you are looking. If you are looking down or too close in front of you it will be near impossible to be aware of your descent rate, your altitude and possibly your attitude (which controls direction of flight)
Second is stay relaxed. Stiffening up and or holding your breath will surely not allow you to fluidly control the trike. Like riding a horse you MUST be relaxed with your elbows preferably down allowing the trike to “fly” while the control bar moves freely.
Third keep your head centered. Shifting your head to the right is typical as the trike drifts to the left. Not only does moving your head to the right not do anything useful, but the mind tends to stop doing other things like work the control bar as the pilot contorts their body in an effort to will the trike in the direction of their head. Also as you move towards your right hand on the bar , you lose the ability to pull your right hand towards yourself to lower that wing. So stay centered and if the trike is banked left “fix” the trike and not your body.
If you can do these 3 things then it might take 100+ landings to get consistent . Beyond that, technique is very useful and there are multiple techniques that will work, but without lots of patience an perseverance the finish line may seem unobtainable. So remember when you see all of these solo videos, these guys are warrior’s that trained for many hours and overcame bad habits (listed above) to achieve their dream.

Hey Ron, welcome to the trike community! Out of curiosity, where are you in Tennessee? We are south of Chattanooga, near Lafayette, GA.

Ron and I have been training together in Nashville. One thing I will say is he is VERY patient. The only thing getting between him and solo, is weather and work schedule, but he is undeterred. Stay tuned for solo video very soon! One of the best things to do between flights is exactly what you are doing…hangar flying and using all the resources and experience available on this new site! Welcome to the site Ron!

David Schultz-can you provide more contact information for prospects interested in training in your vicinity?
-
You talk about patient and kind! David is that as an instructor and friend.

Do you guys fly out of Murfreesboro (KMBT)? It’s only 105 miles for me. Was thinking it would make a fun day trip up and back.
-
Hi Quinn,
Yes, KMBT. It would be great to have you visit! Anytime.

Sounds great. Maybe on a decent day, I’ll contact you and see if schedules line up. BTW, we have a fly-in at our field once or twice a year, and it would be great to have more trikers make it. Lot’s of photos on FB for BlueMountainAirpark. My cell is 706-233-2827.

I would like to do that. I’m in cartersville. that’s about 40miles from here. I think I could fly my little trike that far. I might need to drive over a couple of days before and drop off my camping equipment.
-
Hi Peter, you are always welcome to fly up here any time. Feel free to call me. When we get closer to the fly-in, I’ll post it here.

Hang in there Ron. I remember landings being the hardest thing for me to get a feel for. Now, 20 years later, I am still trying to get better at them.

Ron, I am so glad that you are training with Dave. He is a great instructor and he is patient! Do not get discouraged throughout your adventure to becoming a pilot. There will always be plateaus and breakthroughs but stay positive. Breathe. Keep to basics and all will come together for your license. We all will be students as long as we fly.
