• Noob Questions

Hey all! Quick introduction and greetings from Northern Virginia! I am currently an active GA (fun) and airline pilot (work) who has been sitting on the sidelines watching the WSC world go by. I’ve had my eye on getting a trike for a while but just haven’t made the jump….hoping that might change. I currently own a Beech Bonanza which I keep in Manassas, VA (KHEF)….and have a few questions for the group to help me with some decision making. All responses are appreciated.

First, I understand that I will need to transition to WSC and that is a serious commitment…I understand the training requirements and the level of proficiency that would be required. Assuming the acquisition and transition is complete, I would be planning on keeping the trike at KHEF which is, of course, inside the DC SFRA. With that said, here are a few things on my mind:

    1) Radio/Transponder/ADS-B In/Out would be mandatory. What options are there for WSC when it comes to the avionics packages typically seen? I have seen several trikes with radios, and I assume a Mode C transponder would also be possible. With that combo, there are a few ADS-B solutions that could be added. (Garmin GDL-82, Tailbeacon). I am only interested in UAT options (no 1090ES or Mode S Transponders) as anonymous mode is a requirement of mine.

    2) Light Sport vs Experimental. I would be leaning towards experimental due to the simplicity of being able to customize the trike with desired equipment. Also, I would want to be able to do the condition inspections. I did the the 16 Hour Repairman (Light Sport Aircraft) course with Brian McCallen many years back when I was involved in the PPC world but never did anything with it. I still have all the course documents, etc for that….is there a similar type of course currently taking place to focus on WSC?

    3) What temperature is typically regarded as too cold to fly? I do ride motorcycles (but obviously at significantly lower speeds) so I understand how cold it can get in the wind….just wondering when folks are saying it’s just too cold. I would be looking at a trike with a windscreen.

    4) Not interested in 103 machines…need an N-Numbered trike.

    5) I’m about 225lbs so need something that isn’t weight limited….my #1 choice would be a REVOLT…are there any other machines out there similar?

    Thank you!

Typically The MGL panel iEFIS with integrated MGL radio, sandia transponder and uAvionix UAT ADSB. All two place are “light sport aircraft” so you are thinking S-LSA (certified) or E-LSA just like airplanes (standard category or experimental). I fly all winter down to 0 degrees F temperatures with 12 volt Gerbings motorcycle boots, gloves and jacket. Nothing similar to the Revolt but I like the Revo. Yes you can take a 16 hour course for WSC to do your own inspections and maintenance on a E-LSA.

Thanks for the reply Paul. I’m sorry I mis-typed when I was referring to Light Sport. I did mean S-LSA vs E-LSA.

      Appreciate the tips!
