The Problem with Smoke
Last year I engineered a smoke system for my trike, turned out to be relatively simple – I was like a kid with a new toy, still am – Anyway, for the third time someone called in a plane crash – Each time the entire circus came out to play – I don’t even realize it until I someone tells me later on – I have no interest is causing problems for anyone, so I called the State Police, told them it was me and that I wanted to work somethin out going forward so this doesn’t happen again, or at least they will have some awareness – This guy, Officer Jones ripped me a new one for my efforts – He actually started to make up ordinances that do not exist , and went on to say I could be liable- I won’t bore you with the details, suffice it to say, he was wrong and I was legal, on all counts – So I attempted to keep my smoke at altitude, 500 agl, and it still happened again – I tried to work it out and they just wouldn’t talk to me – Or he wouldn’t talk to me – After all the time, money and effort I put into getting this built, I have no intention of giving it up – Does anyone here have the same experience – And how do you deal with it? – And if anyone is interested, I got the cost of the entire system less than $!50

Unfortunate that law has to act that way. I would be very interested in your smoke machine. Post some pics.

I dabbled with the smoke thing as well. I made a little container that strapped into the passenger seat, had a container for fluid, a pump with battery, and hooked it up to the exhaust. It worked pretty good. One day at the hangar, a local cropduster told me of an incident just like yours. I guess cropdusters have an oil line to the exhaust too, to determine wind direction. He said someone phoned in a 911 call of a plane crash and the emergency vehicles were searching all over for the crash. I have since been leary of smoking any more. I have no idea of the legality of it tho.
