    6 -PLY TIRES-

I fly a 2010 Airborne XT. I have been buying 4 ply tires and i am on my fourth set in three flying seasons. Does anybody use 6 ply tires? I know Larry does on his trikes but I am wondering if anyone flying an airbrone like mine uses them. If so can you let me know which ones you use? Thanks!

Actually, I believe even Airborne switched to 6 ply tires over the last few years on their M4 trikes. I could be wrong, but I think they were using Airtrac 600s. But those are much taller tires than the XT stock tires and will not fit under the wheel spats unless you modify the mounting system and raise them up for clearance

The other problem you are having is that your wheels are probably not tracking due to the axles not being true from normal use even. Some nice custom axles I think Ken Highfield is building may fix that issue which destroys any good tire. So you might try the same tires again with straight axles and get better results.

Hey Larry thanks for the reply. I have new axles on my trike. Less than a year old. I also purchased a new set from Ken already. I plan on changing to those when I change out the tires. I did go on aircraft spruce and i found a pair of 6 ply that are the same size that I need but at 165.00 per. The tires are wearing evenly across the treads on both sides its just that the right hand tire is wearing quicker than the left. Can it be due to P Factor that there is more down force on the right side of the aircraft on take off roll? Prop rotates to the left and engine torques to the right??? Just a thought.

Hi Gino, I would suspect toe angle as the source of your problem. with toe in or out, you will shread the tread right off of whatever tire you put on there.

The Tires on the Revolt are 4Ply. I considered putting 6 ply on mine but decided to keep it stock. The 6 ply were heavier. We get those stickers in Arizona called bullheads. Those stickers will give 4 ply flats but haven’t heard of them giving a 6 ply a flat. I did run some slime in one of my tires and it was fine for a couple of years. Slime dries out though. It was messy when i put on my new tires but did not damage anything. I have a 4 ply with a tube in my front tire. We have friends at the airport that run 6 ply tires on their trikes with no issues.. Their tires are smaller than mine on the revolt though.

Thanks Roger. I reversed my tires on the wheels to even out the ware. I noticed that they are ply but I also notice that the tread profile also was different between the tires. I bought them as a set. I also switched out the axles and added nitrogen to my rear shocks. I will see how it goes
