• Oil Thermostat YES or NO?

Posted by Roger Larson on October 19, 2022 at 11:52 pm

I am curious how many of don’t have an oil thermostat on your Rotax 912 or 914 engines. I am hoping you all might answer either way. If you don’t run an oil thermostat, about how long does it take for your engine to warm up to 120F. Have any of you run without an oil thermostat and later decided you needed one? Have any of you had an oil thermostat and later got rid of it? Hopefully many will respond. If you could include your main location you fly and your normal oil temp. I am interested in all brands of trikes . Thanks in advance for your response.

Roger, I do not have a thermostat. My temps while flying run around 185 to 200. I am from Iowa and do not fly in the winter months. I do fly in the upper 50s and my temps sometimes slip to 175 but that is usually on an extended drop in altitude when I drop RPMs.

It also takes me about 8 to 10 minutes to do the initial warm up.

Hey Jim, unless you removed your thermostat, I’m pretty sure your Monsoon has one.

Roger, Run plenty of oil thermostats and aircraft without oil thermostats. As far as I am concerned, aircraft without oil thermostats take way to long to get to temperature for takeoff. Nothing is more irritating than being ready to takeoff and have to wait for the oil temperature to come up. Max oil temperatures should be the same with or without since the thermostat is open. My only gripe about a thermostat is I had one irritating oil leak in one and had to replace the “O” ring. That is with about 5000 hours using them.

I guess i am about to find out. I tried to replace mine and i could not get the hoses off. I tried every trick i could find. I even have a pair of pliers that aid in hose removal. I tried other tricks with no success. Being in Arizona it might not be as necessary as being in other colder climates. My thermostat also had that oil ring leaking. The routing from the Oil cooler to the oil pump is pretty close and it makes it hard for routing since i don’t want a kink in the line. So Paul how long did it take to warm up your trikes in cold weather without a thermostat? I know your a lot colder there than in Arizona. About the coldest i ever fly in is the low to mid 30 degrees F. I have to say though i was amazed at how small the hole is on the thermostat for oil passage. Much smaller than the hose itself.

    Roger,

Do not know in minutes but long enough that I have to wait for it to warm up before takeoff. That is TOO LONG for me. Yes I had a pesky oil leak from a bad “o” ring seal but an easy fix. Yes many times replacing lines is only possible way to do it, cut them off – suck it up and use the knife. Make sure and do an oil purge after such a procedure.
